How to Make a Blu Ray Digital Copy

If you are wondering how to make a digital copy of your Blu-Ray movie you may be shocked to find out that the answer is really simple.  First to explain what a digital copy is. Basically it is converting 1080p HD video into a a bit for bit copy on your hard drive, thus preserving the movie in case the disc should become damaged. Another definition is to put the HD video into a format that your portable devices will understand such as your iPad.  There are 2 ways to get a digital copy from your HD Blu Ray discs, they are:

  • To use a software that will convert Blu Ray to other formats (MP4, AVI, MPEG, MOV, etc)
  • Copy the provided digital copy that is on your Blu Ray disc already ( many popular movies add this to the disc )

Use the Provided Digital Copy

If you have a newer movie or one that on the box says “Digital Copy Included” then you are already in luck. All you need to do is to pop the disc into a Blu Ray drive on your PC or Mac and browse for the file. Once you have it you can copy it to your portable device. Or you may need to use the included software to do the export. Either way you are already one step closer to getting that blu ray digital copy onto the device of your choice.

    I thought the digital copy was on the disk.

    There is a digital copy included with some Blu Ray movies but not all. Also these files are locked. This article is more along the lines of taking a Blu Ray disc and converting it into a digital format so you can put in on a portable device or something similar.
