Blu Lock is anti-rip software that prevents unauthorized copying of Blu-ray^TM Discs by ripping programs. It protects applications for distribution centers, pre-release video dailies, screeners, and web fulfillment, on-demand, content owners, retailers and service bureaus.Blu Lock’s anti-rip copy protection provides on-the-fly protection of commercial and pre-release Blu-ray video content. “Currently the distribution of Blu-ray video content is at risk due to the lack of a high-definition anti-rip copy protection technology. Blu Lock technology is the first and only technology that prevents the piracy of such digital content,” said Chris Wells, Senior VP and GM of Rimage Disc Publishing. “It gives businesses the comfort that their valuable content is protected, preventing revenue loss from unauthorized copying of Blu-ray Discs.”

This is great news for content producers that produce video and movies on the BD format.  It’s yet to be seen if this format will be a cheaper solution compared to the more traditional AACS which is used on most Hollywood movie discs.  Also it’s a matter of time until programmers find out how to get around Blu Lock and start to add it into BD ripping software.  However it does prevent casual copying.

First off you need a Blu Ray decrypter or Blu Ray ripper. There are many available including some free offerings but I will focus on using the DVDFab software since that is what I use most of the time for my Blu Ray movie projects.  I recommend DVDFab Blu Ray Copy because this software is constantly being updated to handle the latest BD movies copy protection schemes.  If you don’t know how Blu Ray copy protection works just know that it’s tricky and it’s constantly updating, not to mention that it requires unlock keys for each title which is a whole other ball of fun.  I of course can’t go into to much detail on how to decrypt these keys so I’ll leave that to the software makers.

The following screenshot show the main interface of DVDFab Blu Ray Ripper which is one of the components you’ll find in DVDFab.  As you can see it’s possible to convert your Avatar movie into a digital format that is supported by XBox 360, PS3, iPod/iPhone, iPad, and other devices.  Let’s just say that all portable devices are supported.

Really that is all there is to it.  You really only need two items, well three possibly.

• A copy of Avatar on BD
• A software that can decrypt and convert (DVDFab)
• A Blu-Ray burner or Blu Ray drive if you don’t already have one.  And no your DVD drive will not be able to read the Blu Ray disc no matter what you do to it.

Ainsoft Blu-Ray DVD Copy is really disappointing that it was even released. It just appears that the software was reskinned from the same code that was put into Xilisoft and numerous other software packages. The software features a sleek, simple interface but boasts limited functionality and overall insufficient customer service, not supprisingly.

The only good feature is it’s built-in decryption that allows clients to circumvent the copy protections and region codes on commercial Blu-ray disks. I had been surprised to find this type of important and looked for-after feature given how simplistic this program is overall. A few other unforeseen features include multi-language support for audio and elective subtitles and an opportunity to adjust output parameters and video effects. Aside from peoples common benefits, the software offers almost nothing when it involves abilities where you can personalize your output disc.

The conventional in the software’s converted video was certainly sufficient too. When compared to the very best programs, there is a perceptible insufficient quality even though it was relatively minor. In addition, we detected the littlest disparity involving the audio and picture throughout our test runs however, the issue wasn’t apparent throughout any subsequent runs. However, i had been impressed while using software’s rather fast conversion speed, which was much more about componen with this particular top three software products.
The Ainsoft website is completely missing of effective tech support team. We looked the manufacturer’s site to find any extra support for the software but disappointingly emerged empty-handed. There’s not just a user guide for your Blu-ray DVD Copy software nor you’ll be able to part of faq’s, which is a significant assistance to the web site. Really, anything additional for the site would greatly assist the site and be an enormous improvement over what’s right now there. In line with such deficit, the web site also lists just one email address contact information under contact information, that you have to inconveniently navigate within the sitemap.

The Carol line of multimedia software looks to be rehashed garbage code that was created in China and packaged as dozens of different software vendors.  My advice is to stay away from this stuff. I’m not saying that stuff from China is all bad, it’s just this rehashed stuff.  And their charging $50 for this. Please. Just stick with DVDFab and you’ll be fine. And no I’m not a DVDFab fanboy, I just know that software works and this one does not.

 Since there are only a handful of Blu Ray apps on the market that can actually make a copy, the quality level is not what it should be. Really there are only 3 applications that work as expected.  Leawo fits into that category and I like this one the best because first off it’s simple to use.  The basic function is point and click, or in this case load the movie disc and click the copy button.  Really that’s all there is to it, other than that it comes down to speed and video quality which we have listed in detail down below.

Ease of Use: Good The interface is pretty straightforward to understand and use. A few options to set and your off and running with the backup. Probably the only good thing I really have to say.

Performance: Good Like I mentioned above, 1 out of 4 movies were backed up successfully. A good Blu Ray backup app needs to have at least a 90% backup rate. 100% is asking too much because of all the new copy protections that they need to keep up with.

Video/Audio Quality: Excellent Well what can I say about the Video quality other than the one disc that was copied looks as good as the original. If it works it works, if it doesn’t than well….

Tech Support: Par When I mentioned the problems I was having with the 4 Blu Ray movies, I at least got a swift response and a comment that they will let the developers know. I did receive one update which helped with the successful backup. But noting as of yet for the other 3 movies.

Summary: Leawo Blu Ray Copy is a good idea, but to compete with Blue Cloner and DVDFab, there needs to be more effort put into it. Mainly with updates. I’m sure going forward they will make the software better and the support for more Blu Ray movies. But for now use at your own risk.

Ease of Use: Excellent Blue Cloner 3′s interface is pretty easy to understand basically 3 options to choose from. First, copy 1:1 which will make a bit for bit copy of the original, extras included.  Second it a movie only copy, which is preferred since 50GB Blu Ray discs are very expensive, so it’s more practical to use a 25GB disc. Third is an option to copy to your hard drive for playback using a playback software such as WinDVD or PowerDVD.

Performance: Excellent The performance of Blue Cloner is very good.  With the 5 movies we tested, we have 5 successful copies. Although this process can take a few hours depending on the size of the movie and the speediness of your PC.

Video/Audio Quality: Excellent The bit for bit copy was perfect, we can’t tell a difference between the original and the copy.  The shrink option will depend on the running time of the movie. If over 2 hours then you will start to see a quality loss. However, the loss is not enough to get upset over unless you are a videophile.  The picture quality is still Blu Ray acceptable.  Watching the backup from the hard drive is excellent also. Just make sure you are using a quality Blu Ray player on your PC.

Tech Support: Very Good Support must be good for a software such as this since they are constantly playing catchup with all the new Blu Ray copy protections coming out with each release.  So updates are a must and these guys have stayed updated so far and they plan on supporting all movies going into the future.  Currently they only offer FAQ’s and Guides on their site. However these are in good detail and should help you through the rough spots if any should arise. As a last resort they have a support email address.

Summary: To recap, Blue Cloner 3 has our GOLD Award for 2012. If you have a need for backing up those Blu Ray discs then this is the one app to use.

Cons: The pro is also the con. This software only converts to MKV, if you need more options then this software is not for you.

What we think: Xilisoft is a decent software maker and since this is one of few software titles that converts to MKV, it is worth looking at if you need this format.

Xilisoft has been around making multimedia software for Windows and Mac users since 2008. Despite being a rather newer software vendor they have released a few good titles to date including their iPod Transfer software. Their latest MKV release is a welcome one for many users since MKV can be played on PC’s using free video playback software and on PS3 systems.

Ease of Use: Good

This software is really easy to setup and use. Since this only does MKV conversions there is not sense of information overload. You simply insert the Blu-Ray disc of choice and choose the output quality settings and click the start button.  You can also use this software to capture screenshots from Blu Ray discs which is pretty cool if you want to save your favorite scene in HD. Finally you can clip and crop the movie if you want to play around with the film and make it your way.

Performance: Good

It is recommended to use a quad core system to take advantage of the higher conversion speeds. Without this expect the process to take hours.  A nice feature allows this process to run in the background if you still need to work on your PC, thus conserving CPU resources for other tasks.

Video Quality: Good

MKV is a great format to store HD video and HD audio in.  The built in converter that Xilisoft uses is pretty good and our results looked good on our HD monitor. I’m sure to a videophile that it’s not as crisp as it should be but for the rest of us the video quality of the outputted MKV files are acceptable.

Tech Support: So-S0

The one issue that you find with most Blu Ray Software makers is the lack of personal support. Xilisoft also fits into this mold. The best you will get from them is a 2 day turnaround with their EMail support or more useful is their online tutorials to help you through any issues you may run into.

Summary:

Xilisoft’s Blu Ray to MKV converter is a good choice to go with if you only have a need to create MKV files or if you want to capture HD screenshots from you BD Movies.  The price point is attractive being under $40.

Pavtube was founded just a few years ago and have been releasing DVD and Blu Ray software since. While still a young company they are jumping into the software business full force and are claiming their spot in the multimedia world. Their Blu Ray Ripper software provides a range of typical functionalities but misses the objective with regards to conversion speed and customizable features.

Ease of Use: Good

Considering the Pavtube Blu-ray Ripper is among the pricier Blu-ray to DVD converters, i was surprised to locate it lacked certain personalization features. For instance, you cannot add artistic effects to the converted video nor can you extract images or audio clips in the original Blu-ray disc (BD) or folder. And while we could adjust the recording output parameters, there is no option to change common video effects for example brightness and contrast.

Regardless of its customizable inadequacies, the software provides most of the standard functionalities most cursory users want including a splitter function and robust Blu-ray decryption to bypass copy protections. Among the best features we discovered that is completely unique towards the software programs are its editing preview. The editor window displays the original video and the output video side-by-side. This way you can observe how the converted file – with your implanted effects – even compares to the initial video.

One more thing we really liked about Pavtube Blu-ray Ripper is it’s one of just a few Blu-ray to DVD converters we reviewed that offers a Mac version of the software. Plus, it provides multiple format compression similar to the number-one ranked Leawo Blu-ray Ripper.

Performance: So-So

Having a bright, flashy color scheme, the interface of Pavtube Blu-ray Ripper is not as subdued or universally appealing as a few of the other software we reviewed nevertheless its layout is nonetheless simple and easy , intuitive to navigate. One of the most conspicuous things about the program is its exceedingly slow conversion speed. There are better conversion api’s out there and Pavtube has not included it in their latest release. Hopefully they will either update this converter or use a better one in the future.

Video Quality: Good

Like many of our other top-rated Blu-ray to DVD converter software applications, Pavtube Blu-ray Ripper offers high caliber video output. Loss of quality is extremely minimal and we didn’t notice any skips within the audio or video. Moreover, any output parameters we changed, such as the bit rate and resolution, were produced precisely within the playback, something we’d expect from well-rounded Blu-ray to DVD converter software.

Tech Support: So-S0

Throughout our research and testing, we’ve come to realize that surprisingly most manufacturers of Blu-ray to DVD converter software don’t records technical support; Pavtube isn’t any exception to that generality. Users can contact the company via email or call their international customer service line (which inconveniently is really a number originating from China) for specific technical issues.

Summary:

Remember that this particular software may not be the best option if your top priorities are conversion speed or the capability to fully customize your output DVD. However, with unique preview capabilities, quality video output along with a Mac version apt for Apple devotees, Pavtube Blu-ray Ripper proves to be a decent application.

What we think: A value priced backup software. If you don’t care about speed or final quality then this software will be fine for your needs. There are better apps available.

The way this software works is by first copying a Blu Ray movie onto your PC’s hard drive and then it will convert it so you can burn it to a DVD disc. In other words this software is a Blu Ray to DVD converter. The title is a little misleading at first thinking that you can actually copy a Blu Ray to a Blu Ray disc.  I was not overwhelmed with this software since there are others on the market that are better.

Ease of Use: Good

EarthSoft has done a decent job with the skinning of this software by including helpful menu choices and ease of use.  The labels are clearly laid out and makes choosing what to do a no brainer. However that’s where the fun ends.

Performance: So-So

I did 3 backup tests and on average the entire backup process took about 3:30 which is much longer than our top recommended Blue Cloner software.  However once the process completed I was able to watch the resulting DVD on my home player.

Video Quality: Good

While watching on a PC and a home system I found that the video quality was watchable along with the audio quality.  Again I was not overly impressed since I can notice good quality compared to better and good quality, and the encoder they use is apparently not the best one on the market.

Tech Support: So-S0

To tell the truth, I was  not expecting to get any reply at all when I contacted their support email.  I did however receive a reply the next day asking for further clairification to my inquiry.  I sent additional info and received a well thought response the following day. Since I didn’t really need their support I can say that you should get a good answer if you ever need their support department.

Summary:

Even though Earthsoft’s BluRay DVD software is priced a little lower than better apps out there it may be worth spending the few extra bucks on something like Blue Cloner or DVDFab to get the best possible quality.  But if you don’t mind the extra time for this software to complete it job then by all means have at it.  It’s an ok Blu Ray to DVD burner and it’s works. Nuff said.
